Greetings!

Please take a moment to review a matter of vital importance: boater safety.

As you are undoubtedly aware, Brianna’s Law, which has been phased in over the past years, is in effect as of January 1st, 2025. This means that all operators of motorized watercraft, regardless of age, must possess a valid Boater Safety Certificate. This is not merely a suggestion, but a legal requirement.

Let us be clear: this applies to everyone, from our seasoned skippers to our youngest sailors eager to take the helm of a motorboat. This ensures that we all share the lake responsibly and safely.

Please remember that sailboats, kayaks, rowboats, paddleboards, and canoes, when powered solely by wind or paddle, are exempt. However, any vessel with a motor, including personal watercraft, falls under this regulation.

For those who have misplaced their certificates, or if you took a course prior to 1990, please take the necessary steps to obtain a new one. The NYS Parks and Recreation can assist those who have taken a course post 1990. For those who need to take the course, a variety of options exist, both in-person and online. More information on courses is at this link: https://parks.ny.gov/boating/safety-courses.aspx

Please also know that any person authorized to use a club motorboat must provide proof of completion of the training before they will be permitted to use the club motorboats going forward.

Let us not wait until the last minute. The potential fines for non-compliance are significant, and more importantly, our collective safety on the water is paramount.

I look forward to seeing you all on the water soon, safely and responsibly.
