The Town of Cazenovia yesterday announced that water samples collected in near-shore areas of Cazenovia Lake during the week of Aug. 25 showed elevated counts of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Microscopic examination has confirmed the presence of Microcystis; some species of this cyanobacteria are known to release harmful chemicals. All residents and users of the lake are advised to avoid contact with areas of the lake with visible blooms (where the water appears green or streaky). Do not allow pets in the water. Seek medical assistance if you experience any health problems after exposure. For more information, visit the DEC webpage at http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/77118.html.
